Model United Nations is a program focused on idealistically and pragmatically depicting the
United Nations at work. During this experience, students represent delegates from countries around the world tackling international problems and conflicts.
MUN is an internationally acclaimed activity. As much as we frown upon the following being used as a motivation for MUN, it is true that MUN is highly regarded by colleges and universities in the United States and overseas.
The Model United Nations Program at Gunn is the strongest in the Bay Area. To give corroboration to this claim, please consider the following statistics:
At Stanford in 2009, the Gunn club brought 10 delegates to a conference with over 200 and won five best delegate awards, more than any other school in attendance.
At Santa Clara Valley MUN in 2010, Gunn's club won five best delegate awards when only nine committees were present. Again, this was more than any other school.
Our club takes pride in its success and will often strike up its self-originated "Master Debaters!" chant before and after conferences.
Gunn Model UN has expanded significantly over the past decade. Gunn MUN was originally combined with Speech and Debate into one club. Several years ago, the clubs were split and given their own leadership.
After the 2008-2009 school year, the Model UN program was split into a club and class. The class was unfortunately disbanded after one year in operation.
With new teacher and student leadership, the club has greatly expanded its conference opportunities and experience over the past several years, going from attending two conferences annually in 2008 to a projected five in 2010.
